How do you determine the size of a cell
WebJun 8, 2024 · The formula for the surface area of a sphere is 4πr 2, while the formula for its volume is 4πr 3 /3. As the radius of a cell increases, its surface area increases as the square of its radius, but its volume increases as the cube of its radius (much more rapidly). Therefore, as a cell increases in size, its surface area-to-volume ratio decreases. WebTo calculate surface area to volume ratio, you will need to do a division (as it is a ratio / fraction). SA:V = SA/V e.g. if I have a surface area of 150mm^2 and a volume of 125mm^3, the SA:V is 1.2:1 or 1.2. This can then be compared to other cells to determine which has the more efficient diffusion of nutrients and removal of wastes.

WebNov 1, 2024 · Divide the number of cells in view with the diameter of the field of view to figure the estimated length of the cell. If the number of cells is 50 and the diameter you are observing is 5 millimeters in length, then one cell is 0.1 millimeter long. Measured in microns, the cell would be 1,000 microns in length.
