The chuck came with an arbor that fits the head stock (8mm WW type) but my tail stock is a 0.300 straight (no-taper) hole that need to be at least 1.25 inches, preferably >3.5 inches long. Make sure that your taper has a tang, fixed or removable, or you may get it stuck in the tailstock. I find a keyless chuck more difficult to use in a vertical drill, as you really need three hands: one to hold the bit, and two to operate the chuck.

Just crank it out a few turns, then put in the chuck. You should feel it hold. If you turn it back all the way, it will push out the chuck.
